Introducing FOOT-CRS

FOOT-CRS (CRS: Catchment and Regional Scales) is mainly targeted at LOCAL AUTHORITIES, STEWARDSHIP MANAGERS and WATER MANAGERS in charge of implementing the WFD and/or limiting the contamination of water resources by pesticides.

The tool, which will use the same decision rules as those implemented in FOOT-FS, will be available as an add-on to the ArcGIS software.

The main objectives of the tool are to:
1) identify those areas that most contribute to pollution of waters by pesticides; and,
2) define and/or optimise action plans at the scale of the catchment.

Estimates of pesticide concentrations in edge-of-field surface water bodies, surface water resource abstraction points and local groundwater will be calculated from simulated pesticide inputs by diffuse sources (drift, runoff and erosion, tile drainage) and point sources (e.g. farmyard runoff, accidental spills), taking into account the size and discharge of the water body, the water volumes associated with runoff and drainage inputs and the presence of bed sediment.

The influence on drift inputs into surface water of the potential presence of any intercepting vegetation (e.g. in buffer zones) and of the distance between the application point and the water body will be accounted for through landscape analysis using aerial photographs and/or satellite imagery.
