The 3 FOOTPRINT tools: FOOT-FS, FOOT-CRS & FOOT-NES

The 3 tools which will are developed within the context of the FOOTPRINT project have different objectives and remits as they are intended to be used by 3 communities of end-users having different requirements with regard to pesticides:
1) Farmers and extension advisers at the Farm Scale (FOOT-FS)
2) Water managers and those in charge of implementing the WFD at the Catchment and Regional Scales (FOOT-CRS)
3) EU and member states policy- and decision-makers, and pesticide registration authorities at the National and EU Scales (FOOT-NES)

Although the 3 tools are working at different scales and will be very different in their presentation, they share the same overall philosophy and underlying science and therefore provide a coherent and integrated solution to pesticide risk assessment and risk reduction from the scale of the farm to the EU scale.

The 3 tools will each allow:
- the identification of those areas in the agricultural landscape that most contribute to the contamination of water resources by pesticides
- estimates of the levels of pesticide contamination in water resources to be made
- the provision of site-specific recommendations on how to reduce the transfer of pesticides to water resources.

The 3 tools are evaluated within the context of the project through a programme of piloting and evaluation tests at the field, farm and catchment scales.

The software applications have been designed to meet the expectations of stakeholders and future users and will therefore integrate different approaches to risk assessment and modelling depending on the target user community. The relevance of the tools developed to the expectations of the target end-user communities has been ascertained through the feedback provided by the members of the Advisory Committee.
