FOOTPRINT for policy makers

Click here for a summary document which provides you with
useful information regarding how the FOOTPRINT tools can be used for policy- and decision-making.

The aim of this section is to present policy makers with the main results of the FOOTPRINT project in a digested and ready-to-use form that can directly be integrated into the policy making process.

FOOTPRINT is a research project in the 6th Framework Programme (Priority 8, SSP-Scientific Support to Policies) which aims at developing a suite of three pesticide risk prediction and management tools, for use by three different end-user communities:
- farmers and extension advisors at the local (farm) scale,
- water managers at the catchment scale,
- and policy makers/registration authorities at the national/EU scale.

EXPECTED RESULT #1: A set of coherent tools for pesticide risk assessment and management, from the large to the local scale

For the first time, policy makers and operationals will benefit from a set of tools working at different scales which will share the same overall philosophy and underlying science.

This means that the transposition of policies from the European and national scales to the regional and local scales will be made easier and will be coherent across the scales. This is a major breakthrough compared to the current situation where tools which are largely unrelated are being used at different scales.

EXPECTED RESULT #2: A set of environmental indicators of pesticide exposure

The three tools will adopt a scoring system that enables environmental performance to be assessed and 'hot spots' in the landscape to be identified.

EXPECTED RESULT #3: A consensus around the tools

The tools at the farm scale will use a combination of existing diagnostic methodologies which have been widely used in Member States. Also, the tools will rely on predictions of state-of-the-art pesticide fate models which have been used in pesticide risk assessment for years.
