The FOOTPRINT Pesticide Properties Database





What is the FOOTPRINT PPDB?

The FOOTPRINT Pesticide Properties Database (FOOTPRINT PPDB) is a comprehensive relational database of pesticide physicochemical and ecotoxicological data.

The database has been developed by the Agriculture & Environment Research Unit (AERU) at the University of Hertfordshire, as part of the EU-funded FOOTPRINT project. The new database is a revised and greatly expanded version of the database that originally accompanied the EMA (Environmental Management for Agriculture) software used in the UK.

The database will be integrated in the FOOTPRINT pesticide risk assessment and management tools (the ‘FOOT tools’).



What data are held in the database?

The database holds data for all EU Annex-1 listed pesticides and selected metabolites. Data can be broadly divided into two areas:

1. Chemical and physical properties which can influence the fate and transport of pesticides in the environment;
2. Ecotoxicological data for a range of taxa.

These data are supplemented by additional information such as alternative chemical names and a list of EU Member States where the active substances are registered.



How is the FOOTPRINT PPDB different from other existing databases?

In contrast to other existing databases, the FOOTPRINT PPDB is rather extensive in the number of compounds it covers (ca. 650 active substances and 200 metabolites). This is due to the fact that the FOOT tools which are being developed as part of FOOTPRINT will be applicable to the whole of the EU25.

Researchers and other users of pesticide data recognise the problems of finding pesticide data. Data are often scattered across many sources on- and off-line and data sourcing is often a frustrating and time consuming activity. The FOOTPRINT PPDB seeks to solve this problem by bringing the best data together in a single dataset.

Also, the FOOTPRINT PPDB is being updated on a very regular basis.



Where do the data originate?

The best sources of information currently available for pesticide properties are the monographs produced as part of the EU review process and these documents have been used in priority for putting together the FOOTPRINT PPDB. Where EU documents were not available, alternative sources were used:
- Databases and documents from various national government departments including the UK’s PSD, Germany’s Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the EPA in the USA (U.S EPA ECOTOX Database / U.S. EPA Pesticide Fate Database) and the French Agritox database.
- On-line databases including ARIS, EXTOXNET, ARS/OSU, PAN, GLEAMS, etc.
- Manufacturers safety datasheets and environmental fact sheets, on- and off-line.
- Publications such as the Pesticide Manual.
- Data derived from research projects such as the Pandora data set.
- Peer reviewed scientific publications.

In a very limited of instances, data had to be retrieved from miscellaneous on-line sources.

All data held in the FOOTPRINT PPDB are ‘tagged’ with a code so that their source and quality can be identified (see below).



What is the quality of the database?

We have taken the utmost care in selecting data and transferring them correctly to the database. Also, we have crosschecked different datasets against each other as a means of ensuring data integrity. Still, we would be most grateful if you could let us know if you identify a mistake in the database. Please note that the FOOTPRINT consortium members cannot be held responsible for any loss or action resulting from the use of the data held in the FOOTPRINT PPDB.

Pesticide data by their very nature can be highly variable. Just because two separate references quote different values does not mean that one is incorrect. Where different sources of data have given widely different values, we have attempted to validate them at source, going back to original publications where possible.

As mentioned previously, each data item is tagged with a code that allows the source of the data to be identified. The tag also includes a quality score, ranging from 1 (low) to 5 (high), which reflects the faith we have in the quality of the data. If the information is unreferenced, it will have a low score. If a data item can be verified then its quality score is increased. For EU data and those derived from national regulators, the quality score will normally be 5. In some instances, the quality score may be downgraded to 4 where there is an element of doubt such as in cases where the endpoint reported is different from our first choice. It should be remembered that the quality assessment process is a subjective process.

The database is actively updated as additional information is identified and new / better data becomes available. You will find the date of the last update of the database on the PPDB web page at www.eu-footprint.org/ppdb.html.



How were pesticide property values selected?

The data quoted for physico-chemical properties are usually a mean value of the various studies identified. Where data are particularly sensitive to climate or soil, a text field providing the data range has been added. Where data are just naturally very variable, we have attempted to select those most appropriate for EU conditions.

For ecotoxicological data the ‘worst case’ data has been selected unless it appears wildly out of character with the majority of studies published. We have chosen specific species and endpoints where ever possible to ensure a harmonised and balanced data set. These are:
- Mammals – rats or mice, acute oral LD50, short term 90-day NOEL
- Birds – quails or mallards, acute oral LD50
- Fish – rainbow trout or bluegill sunfish, acute 96-hr LC50
- Invertebrates – daphnia magna or daphnia pulex, acute 48-hr ErC50
- Algae - selenastrum capricornutum or scenedesmus subspicatus, acute 96-hr ErC50
- Higher aquatic plants – lemna gibba or lemna minor, 14-day EC50
- Earth worms – eisenia foetida, 14-day LC50
- Honeybees – apis mellifera, lowest of oral and contact LD50

FOOTPRINT is concerned with fate and risk in the aquatic environment. The terrestrial taxa included in the database are included due to its historic nature and have been updated and extended as part of another project.



How can I access the database?

The database can be accessed for free through the present page (www.eu-footprint.org/ppdb.html).

The database can also be obtained as an MS Access 97 file on request. The cost of this will depend upon the intended use of the data. Please for further details.

The database will be added to the ADLib resource (Agricultural Document Library - www.adlib.ac.uk) from late spring 2006.



Can I use the information in the database?

The information contained in the FOOTPRINT web pages can be used free of charge
provided proper reference to the database is given.

We welcome direct links from external pages to the FOOTPRINT PPDB web pages, but
only accept them if proper acknowledgement to the fact that the data were gathered within the context of the EU-funded FOOTPRINT project is given.

The acknowledgement has to be explicit and could take the form of a line of text with the FOOTPRINT URL or the display of EU and FOOTPRINT logos. Please for more details. Failure to comply with the request for acknowledgement will lead to the adoption of technical measures to restrict linkage to the data and may ultimately result in legal action.
